Anyone with any brains doesn't try to shoot drag racing at night without a flash. I have a very nice flash unit but do not like using it.
Tonight I dragged along a couple soft boxes. They were helpful but I’m trying to get the camera settings at 1600 ISO, f/4.0, and a shutter of 1/250. Most of these were ISO 3200 or 6400. The aperture was f/2.8 (higher would be better here). Even pushing the ISO and aperture my shutter was nowhere near 1/250th. Bottom line the soft boxes, although they helped somewhat, still was not enough.
A flash is generally used on the camera or pretty much close up. The other option is a strobe. Strobes are a lot more powerful and you don’t need to have it close. You do need it aimed and so far when I’ve dragged the strobe unit I’ve had positioning issues. I think it needs to be either roof level of the tower or maybe bouncing the strobe off the mid-tower area.
Some Wednesday night I think I’ll drag the soft boxes and the strobe out with a ladder and see if I can get the camera setting I’m after. If I get near the preferred settings then the picture quality should be awesome.
Since the strobe is behind the driver it isn't an issue like a flash. Another positive quality of the strobe unit is it refreshes fast so you can rapid fire.
